Equity Statement
Effective Date: October 2024

Everyone is welcome at Virginia Fresh Match locations.
At Virginia Fresh Match (VFM), we are committed to building a more equitable and inclusive community where everyone thrives. Supporting community engagement is key to our mission. Our network grows through the diverse strengths of the communities we work with.
Historical Context:
Virginia’s food system is deeply rooted in and continues to be influenced by a history of exploitation and dispossession, particularly of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). We also recognize that identities, such as race, gender, sexuality, and geography, intersect and compound these challenges within the food system. Acknowledging this, we commit to redressing these injustices by supporting BIPOC farmers, producers, retailers, and customers while being conscious of these intersecting forms of oppression.
VFM’s Principles of Equity and Inclusion:

Accessibility:
We aim to break down barriers to fresh food access for low-income families by doubling SNAP dollars at markets and retailers. By making these resources readily available, we ensure that all Virginians can participate in a more equitable food system.

Empowerment:
We empower families to access critical nutrition by doubling their SNAP benefits, enhancing their purchasing power and sense of agency over their diet.

Support for Diversity:
We ensure that our programs are culturally responsive and inclusive, centering the needs of historically marginalized communities. We actively seek out partnerships with historically disenfranchised groups and regions to create opportunities that reflect their cultural and agricultural traditions.

Economic Empowerment:
By increasing the purchasing power of SNAP benefits at farmers markets, mobile markets, and locally-owned retail businesses, we support local farmers and create economic opportunities within Virginia communities.

Community Collaboration:
Equity is a collective responsibility. Through partnerships with local organizations, governments, and market managers, we build a collaborative network that fosters food security. By actively seeking input from community members, we adapt our programs to meet their evolving needs and ensure everyone is heard and valued.

Outreach & Capacity Building:
We work alongside our network of partners, sharing resources, knowledge, and support to collectively strengthen their capacity to meet their communities' unique needs. By fostering an environment of mutual learning and collaboration, we aim to build a more resilient and equitable food system across Virginia.
